Books
As he walked into the bookstore, straight ahead of him stood a lady about 5’ 4, dark brown hair, and a smile on her face. Can I help you? She asked. He paused for a moment and had a puzzled look on his face, he didn’t know what books he needed, there was no way he would be able to find them all by himself. Dave smiled. Do you have your schedule? She said. Yes yes, he said. His hands made there way to pat his pockets for any paper that might be inside. It looked as if he had lost his schedule. He found nothing and suddenly reached for the small pocket of his back pack and unzipped the pocket. He pulled it out, unfolded it and handed her the schedule. She glanced over it, “wow! 15 hours, huh?” That’s a pretty good load. He smiled again, as she proceeded to walk to the back of the store in search for the books he would need for the classes. Could she really know all the books he would need just by looking at his schedule? Let’s see here, she said. English? She asked. Yes, he replied. You’ll need this one, and this one, as she handed him his first two books and that’s when the pile started. Math added two more, he already had four books and he was only two classes in. She continued with a smile and a pleasant attitude to find the rest. She must have done this a lot because no matter which class it was she new exactly what isle and shelf that these books would be on. The pile grew heavy as she added psychology and a fit for life book. Who needs a fit for life book he asked himself rhetorically? Really do you even learn anything in fit for life isn’t it just a class that you get to play fun sports and goof off in?. She just smiled. Microbiology, that will be a cool class, she said. She had notice that he was getting a little nervous from the amount of books that was piling up; this must have been her sad attempt to cheer him up. She piled one big biology book on top of the rest and informed him that there was lab and class outlines that he had to buy else where because they didn’t have any at the book store. When he had first walked into the bookstore he was kind of excited to get his books, now he wasn’t so thrilled. Well that’s all you need to get here there will be a few other book s that you need to buy but you will have to get those else where, she said. Then she walked him up to the counter for check out. Here came the hard part, paying for them.
The nice lady had handed him off like a football to some other player that was going to ring up his books. How are you doing? She asked. Great he said, even though that wasn’t the expression on his face, it was just the natural thing you say to people when they ask you a question like that. Beep, beep went the books as she placed each individual book over the scanner the emotion on his face took on a rather disgusted look as each book made one more beep. First the little screen read sixty five, then one hundred and three, after that the price seemed to grow exponentially. Could I even afford this he thought? Three hundred and fifty she said as politely as possible so as not to scare him away. He pulled out his wallet which seemed to give him a frighten look on his face as if he didn’t have enough to cover this outrages fine for books. His hands made there way to his plastic card which would have to cover this amount until the bill arrives some day he’s not expecting in the future.
It’s hard to start out on your own, break away from that metaphoric wing of your parents which they hold over you when you’re young. When this first happens you don’t realize the little things which add up. What a joke that Dave has to pay for such a hefty fine for books when he is just starting out as a student in college. So many people are victim to this every semester when new books must be purchased for other classes. Why would the school or any other foundation making money off this, want to target students? Books are and essential part of any class that you take and no matter what, you will need to buy them whether they are fifty or one hundred dollars. Such and unfortunate society, in which we fill the need to mark up our books, that are being sold to students to bankrupt them. We are more focused on making a dollar rather then let the students stay focused with there school work. Students often times fill the need or have this need to work to support them selves. Can we improve our society if we have the younger generations working instead of learning? The fact that these books we need have to be so much. Now they all have to get a second job just to pay for school.
